Ellis climbed out of the swimming pool and grabbed a towel to dry himself off. In between the flashes of blue terrycloth towel and water drops falling from his hair, he noticed his cell phone lighting up with an incoming text message. He threw the towel on the lounge chair to pick up his phone.
There were two smiley face emojis and the words: GR8 News. Call Sharon a.s.a.p. Ellis set the phone back down. Whenever Sharon had news, it was usually about someone she met at a bar or coffee place, and he didnât feel like hearing about it right now. He was prepared to ignore her, but then the message came through once again. He picked up his phone, swearing as he dialed Sharonâs contact number.
âWhatever this is it had better be good. I was in the pool,â Ellis snapped when she picked the line.
She started speaking before Ellis could say anything else. âThe pool isnât going anywhere. Now listen, I have the perfect guy. You have lots in common. You both work in food service. He was a model, but he quit to manage some Starbucks in Beverly HillsâI canât imagine whyâso heâs got money, and did I mention that heâs very handsomeâ¦? Just your type, dude.â
âThanks, Sharon. No offense, but I donât really need you to find men for meâ¦â
âIâve told you a million times: as your friend, itâs my duty, and Iâm trying to keep you away from that waiter whoâs always sucking up to you.â
âLeave Shane alone. I think you should know thatâ¦â
âSince you know who Iâm talking about, then I donât have to mention his name.â
âBe nicer to him, Sharonâ¦â Sharon laughed on the other end, and Ellis had to move the phone from his ear.
âAnyway, let me tell you some more about this guy I found for you. His nameâs Kody, and he just turned twenty-three. Heâs tall and has muscles and bright golden, curly hair like an angel. If he werenât gay, I would steal him away from you. Heâs coming to meet you tomorrow for lunch, so I want you to be simply fabulous to him... and I want an invitation to the wedding for setting this up, maybe even as the maid of honor or something.â
âDonât start picking out your dress for the wedding, Sharon, and Iâll act like I always do. Tell this guy Kody that Iâm already seeing someone named Shane.â
Sharon clucked her tongue on her end of the line and then gave him a cheery goodbye before hanging up.
Ellis sat on the edge of the lounge chair with the towel and phone on his knee, staring at ripples in the water created by the lights circling around the blue tile beneath the surface.
He could still feel Shaneâs kiss on his lips, and the sensation made the blood rush to every part of his body. Even Roger had never caused such emotion. Shane would leave the restaurant to begin filming the pilot for this new series. He hadnât given notice yet, but Ellis assumed it would be soon.
